How did it begin? My dad inspired me with his love for landscaping. One day he asked me if I had an interest in plants. Obviously, it was on my mind. I began to research…specifically American Wildflowers. I was impressed with their beauty and that of the native plants of Florida. My research led me to the Florida Native Plant Society. It is a giant database of Florida native plants, their science and characteristics. My journey began with seed purchases online. My first plant was the scarlet sage. It is aggressive at reseeding, which intrigued me…and yes, it is growing everywhere! During my seed research, the passionflower images were identified as native, while the seeds were not classified as such. The climbing plant is visually appealing, but I later discovered the true native passionflower. This experience taught me the importance of choosing the correct seeds.
My next venture was to attract butterflies. Milkweed is a host plan t for monarchs. I was fascinated with the caterpillars and the beauty of their chrysalis and finally seeing monarchs, gulf fritillary and queen butterflies in the garden. My sunflower plants are a black variety, and the others are Mexican sunflowers. To my surprise the parrots found them and had quite a feast! It was a beautiful sight. I am looking forward to other new ventures as the seeds blossom and more critters appear! It has been a fun hobby.
